Behind the Seams: How Afriprint Pieces Are Made

by Alexis Williams on Jul 22, 2025
Behind the Seams: How Afriprint Pieces Are Made

We live in a world where fast fashion moves at lightning speed — but here at Afriprint, we’ve chosen a different path.

Our pieces aren’t made in factories. They’re crafted in Ghana — with care, purpose, and legacy stitched into every detail. Whether you’re carrying one of our handmade bags or cooling off with a bold fan, you’re holding something personal, powerful, and deeply rooted in culture.

This is what slow fashion with soul looks like.

🧵 Step 1: It Starts With the Print

Every Afriprint piece begins with a carefully chosen African wax print. Our founder, Alexis Williams, works closely with Ghanaian textile vendors to source fabrics that reflect tradition, story, and soul. These aren’t trendy, one-season prints — they’re vibrant, cultural expressions meant to last.

We select each print based on:

  • Its symbolic meaning

  • Its visual strength

  • Its ability to represent the women we name our pieces after

The result? Every item you receive carries both beauty and purpose.

✋🏽 Step 2: Made by Hand — Not Machine

Unlike mass-produced accessories, every fan, bag, and wrap in our collection is handmade by skilled artisans like Janet B. in Teshie, Ghana.

Here's what goes into the process:

  • Fans: Each fan is cut, sewn, glued, and stitched by hand, then finished with leather handles and folded with precision.

  • Bags: Fabrics are cut to pattern, lined, and reinforced to ensure structure. Handles are stitched by hand, and finishes are applied one by one.

  • Headwraps: Fabric edges are hand-hemmed or surged to prevent fraying and preserve long-lasting wear.

No two pieces are ever exactly alike — and that’s the point. Your heirloom is one of one.

💪🏽 Step 3: Empowering Women Through Every Sale

Our products aren’t just made in Africa — they’re made for impact.

Every purchase directly supports:

  • Women artisans and their families

  • Children’s education in Ghana

  • Small, sustainable workshops instead of sweatshops

  • The Healing Crown Alliance initiatives for bereaved mothers and Black maternal health

You’re not just shopping. You’re shifting lives.

🌍 Why Slow Fashion Matters

Fast fashion may be convenient, but it comes with a cost — one that’s often paid by underpaid workers, unsustainable materials, and cultural erasure.

Afriprint is built to be different:

  • Sustainable — we make small batches, not landfill-bound trends

  • Cultural — every design honors African heritage and the Diaspora

  • Ethical — your money goes to real people with real stories

This isn’t just fashion. It’s a legacy in the making.

✨ Final Thoughts: The Next Time You Wear Us...

Think about the artisan who cut that fabric by hand.
The woman in Ghana who smiled when she zipped your bag closed.
The legacy that lives inside each print.

At Afriprint, you don’t just wear culture — you honor it.
